The USO show had Mr. Green Jeans here last night. The first real entertainer I'ver ever seen. He sang a few songs and talked some. He's just like he is on TV. They also had a good looking girl with them. She had a outasight outfit on. If all the girls are wearing what she was, I'll go nuts when I get home. The armory looks like new.
8 August 1971
We finished the armory today. We have our own ice cream man, bell and all.
10 August 1971
I went to the tape center and did some recording of songs I liked. We had a big inspection of the armory today and passed.

The maids have been on strike for a week. The hootch is really a mess.
19 August 1971
It's finally cooling down over here. The rains are here.
22 August 1971
Miss America was here last Friday night. My head is still spinning. I got to dance with Helga Yungst Miss New Jersey. WOW!! I busted two blood vessels in my right hand from clapping so much. Phyllis George was Miss America. I got Phillis Georges' autograph, but I lost it, however I did save the pen she wrote with. I also got Suzanne Shields, Miss Arizona. I lost it too. 100 days to go!!

All of the bases are on yellow alert, this happens just before you get hit, red alert means you are under attack, grey alert, on stand by, white alert, no attack is known to be in the makings. We were hit and Tun Su Nu were hit. The Koreans have a big operation going on in our area. We have been making ammo runs all week.

So far we haven't been hit. This is the last night to be on alert.
The reason we don't get hit as often as everyone else is that the VC can't get any supplies in our area, plus the Koreans have operations going on al the time. They are the biggest help.
30 August 1971
I got an inch cu in my right hand from opening up an ammo can. It was deep, and it will be by the time I get home. My toe nail on my right foot is almost like it was before. I'm not the home teacher supervisor any more. They are reorganizing the branch. I doubt if I will have a job. I'm out of the three months blues.
31 August 1971
The base is starting to close down. They have already started clearing out stuff taking buildings down, and the F-4 jets will leave soon. It was a real experience seeing the place start to close down. Seeing the big planes come in, and load up even regular air liners started coming in taking the army troops home.

I finally got my assignment, Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Texas. One of the main rumors is that one of the main chow halls is closing. I moved today to the Hootch that Paul Beemer lives in.
5 September 1971
I have started to become inactive in church.

7 Septemer 1971
The reason I count the day is that everyone does, so why fight it. I read some pamphlets on San Angelo and Goodfellow should be a good assignment.
8 September 1971
My parents hear that Phu Cat would be turned over to the Vietnamese, and it was.
9 September 1971
I'll be going to my short timers briefing on Monday.
