29 September 1971

Dear Dad,

You must want that AK-47 pretty bad.  Right now we've got 20 of those rifles in our armory. Honestly, if I could bring one home I would, but I just can't. It's an automatic weapon. If we get lucky a SKS may come in, if we do get one I'll bring that home. So far all I've managed to get ahold of is a Viet Cong bow and about 15 to 20 arrows and a couple of knives.  The other squadrons are turning in all their war trophies to us, and I can usually get what I want.  I'm working swing shift now.  We just got through.  I had to change shifts because they had a guy out of the back office who had to work over here.  We are getting a few hundred Vietnamese soldiers to help with the security this coming month. Also, they are closing one of our chow halls.  A lot of places are closing the 15th of November.  I'm leaving just in time here without any attacks.  We are always ready if they do.  I've really had a good tour of duty since I've been here.  I've learned a lot about living since I've been here.  I believer you will see a change in me.

31 September 1971
I finally will have 300 days in Vietnam the 1st of Oct.  I'm glad to see Oct. roll around.  It won't be long.  Everything is normal.

5 October 1971
I finally got my orders for Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Texas.  I can start to process out now.  I just got up, it's 10:30 AM.  I am sitting here drinking a big orange.  As you can see I finally got my orders.  The 16th of Oct. Ya'll can start counting the days down with me.  I went to the show last night, and saw Little Big Man.  I thought it was pretty good.  Well, not much else to say.  60 more days to go.

7 October 1971
Everyone got a good assignment.  All were close to home.  There were two assignments to Barksdale, oh well, I like mine best.  Well not much else is new. October is rolling along as have the other months.  All my friends got their assignments today.  Everyone got what he wanted.  Everyone is real happy.  The poor guys leaving in December are madder than ever, except for me and another guy.  I can't blame them.

10 October 1971
I just finished reading three Church News. I finally made it to church today.  Also the Vietnamese women that was baptized was there also and she gave her testimony for us.  She's a real nice person.  I just wish there were more like her, then the South Vietnamese would win this war for sure.  They are having family home evening on Tuesday nights.  I will be able to make those.  Also I will be a home teaching companion to Billy Bowen.  We are going to get some of it done this week.  Also I should be in Cam Rhan Bay Friday for church conference that will be the 15th and 16th of this month.  I got to work with the Office of Special Investigation or OSI.  What happened was that we had three radios missing, and I went with them on an inventory check.  We found all but the three that were missing or still missing.  Today is Sunday, and it's bright and sunny.  I don't know what has happened to the monsoon.  It acted like ti was going to rain then it stopped.

11 October 1971
I've had a cold for about a week.  I'm just over it. It makes my fourth this year.  It's a lot cooler now that its started raining.  I still use the fan at night.

13 October 1971
Just got back form midnight chow.  I may get to go to church conference in Cam Rhan Bay but, I haven't gotten any orders to go yet. It's this Friday and Saturday.  Major Smith, our group leader, will be leaving the 23 of October to go home.  I sure did think a lot of him, he's a real hard worker.
