I got to work on a AK-47 today. I'm going to try and get some pictures of it. It was brought down for us to clean it. They got it, Feb. 23, 1969 when 5 sappers tried to come on Phu Cat. They had 4 B40 rockets, and 20 hand grenades, and the AK47. We killed 4 and captured one of them. It's more like a submachine gun. The US is starting to use it, they say it's better than the M-16. I wouldn't know, but the M-16 is a good weapon, and it's easy to repair in a hurry. I'm moving form where I'm at now to hootch 918. An old buddy of mine, Cowan, the same guy who drove down with me and Capt. Smith on the way home, stays there. Time for a change. It rained hard today. I'm okay.

I plan to go to Cam Rhan Bay for conference the 1-3 of July.

I was already talking about Christmas at this time, saying this Christmas would be the biggest Christmas the Ault family ever had. I fixed my first .38 yesterday. I can put that thing together, and take a part in a matter of minutes. I know the M-16 and the M-60 machine gun by heart. Guns are really simple plus the M-79 and M-12 are among others I can fix. I've really learned a lot, I sure was lucky to get the job in the armory. They are really having a big problem with drugs over here. I still haven't seen any, but its here. I can't see why people go to that stuff. They have a lot on TV about it, and they are getting real strict about it on the guys going home, maybe that will stop it. I don't know, I don't plan on worrying about it. They had a big write up about Phu Cat in the New York Times, it's enclosed.

I gave a brief talk on the M-16 at the commander's call today. I really enjoyed doing it. Everyone really listened. They said I did a good job.
26 June 1971
David Majors, an old buddy of mine from Texarkana was stationed in Da Nang, that the most hit base in Vietnam. I moved to a new hootch last night. Me and Manely, Cowan, a guy from my last base, and a guy named Adams. We have the TV and the refrigerator, and thee is plenty of room.

Finally got my Gilmer Mirror. Jim Grubbs wrote yesterday. he seems to be doing good. It's really been raining the last few days. I will be calling home this Sunday. I should be going to Cam Rhan Bay the first of July for Conference. I will be there for three days. That will help get July started. August is the big month because I get my orders in September. That will be a long month. I'm getting there, I just hope I get a good assignment. Will close for now.

I went to breakfast. I had 4 eggs, 4 pieces of french toast, 4 glasses of milk. When I go eat, I eat as much as I can. I only eat two meals a day. I'm going to be a guest speaker at the 1883rd Commanders Call. I'm to give a briefing on the M-16, care and cleaning. I'm going to feel important for a change.
